The Baron planned to take over the castle and extensively renovate it in keeping with his cultural and social commitments. But before the contract with the previous owners was finally signed, an incident occurred that almost thwarted the purchase.

The horror in the keep – According to tradition, Baron Rothschild and his wife Bettina toured the castle together. The tour left no room untouched, so that they eventually reached the lower floors of the keep, where the former dungeon was located. It is said that human remains were discovered within the dark walls – the remains of prisoners who had once lost their lives here under terrible conditions. For Bettina von Rothschild, this moment must have been deeply unsettling. According to legend, she was so horrified by the discovery and the gloomy atmosphere of the place that she urged her husband to call off the purchase. Decades later, around the 1990s, archaeologists and historians began once again to explore the castle’s past. This included the excavation of the filled-in dungeon. The aim was to uncover part of the lost historical structure and to document any remains that might shed light on the prisoners’ living conditions. However, the work proved difficult. The structural integrity of the keep’s neo-Gothic staircase had suffered over the centuries, and excavating the lower floors threatened to seriously jeopardise the building’s stability. A comprehensive restoration would have incurred immense costs, far exceeding the project’s budget. Ultimately, the excavations had to be abandoned, and the mystery of the dungeon remains largely unsolved to this day.

Fact or Fiction? – As with many historical anecdotes, the question arises: did the story of Baron Rothschild and the dungeon actually happen as it is told, or have later reports and traditions embellished the events? Historical documents that could substantiate the exact circumstances of the castle’s purchase are scarce. Furthermore, stories associated with famous figures often tend to be dramatised or romanticised. However, one must not overlook the fact that the use of dungeons and prison facilities was quite common in the Middle Ages, and many of these places were indeed the scenes of cruel events. It would therefore not be entirely unlikely that the remains of prisoners were found in the castle’s former dungeon and that this influenced the Rothschilds’ decision to purchase the estate.
