The Legend of Princess Zaida: The Enchanted Beauty of the Castillo de Almodóvar del Río
In picturesque Andalusia, not far from the city of Córdoba, stands the majestic Castillo de Almodóvar del Río, a medieval fortress that captivates not only with its impressive architecture but also with the enthralling legend of an extraordinary woman – Princess Zaida, also known as ‘La Encantá’, the Enchanted One. In this article, we take you on a journey back to the 11th century to explore the story of this mystical princess and the stirring events surrounding the castle. We draw on historical context and various sources to paint a complete picture of this fascinating tale.
The historical setting: Córdoba in the 11th century – The 11th century was a turbulent era in the history of Spain, characterised by political upheaval and cultural exchange. At that time, Córdoba was under Moorish rule, a period during which the city rose to become a centre of science, art and architecture. The Taifa kingdoms, successor states to the collapsed Caliphate of Córdoba, were vying for supremacy on the Iberian Peninsula. Amidst this political turmoil reigned Abu Nasir al-Fatah al-Mamum, a Moorish prince renowned for his bravery and loyalty. His beloved, Princess Zaida, was thought to have come from a noble family and was renowned for her beauty and intelligence. There are differing accounts of her exact origins and background, but it is certain that she was a prominent figure within the Moorish society of Córdoba.
The Code of Honour and the Role of the Fortress – To secure their power, the Moors erected numerous fortifications, including the Castillo de Almodóvar del Río, whose origins date back to the 8th century. This fortress served not only military purposes but also as a refuge for nobles and important figures during periods of conflict. The castle’s strategic location, high above the River Guadalquivir, enabled its inhabitants to spot potential attackers at an early stage and defend themselves against sieges. As such, the castle was a symbol of both power and protection – a safe haven in uncertain times.
The dramatic turning point: the Almoravid attack of 1091 – In 1091, the conflict reached a climax when the Almoravids, a warlike people from North Africa, attacked Córdoba in order to seize control of the Andalusian region. The siege was fierce and brought great suffering to the inhabitants. Abu Nasir al-Fatah al-Mamum, as military leader, was entrusted with the defence of his city. Faced with this danger, he made a difficult decision: for her safety, he sent his beloved Zaida to the Castillo de Almodóvar del Río, far from the immediate fighting. Whilst the prince went into battle, the princess was to remain safe behind the fortress’s thick walls.
The tragic fate of Princess Zaida – The battle was bloody and ended in defeat for the defenders of Córdoba. Abu Nasir fell in the fighting; his hopes of protecting the city and his wife were shattered. News of his death reached the Castillo, where Zaida was holding out. Legend has it that the princess, overcome by grief and despair, sank into a state of deep melancholy. She took neither food nor drink and shut herself away in the solitude of the castle. Many young men and servants tried to comfort her, but she remained steadfastly trapped in her grief. Eventually, Zaida died of exhaustion, her life extinguished by the torment of longing and the pain of loss. According to this tale, after her death her spirit transformed into ‘La Encantá’ – the enchanted princess, whose apparition can still be seen at night in the corridors of the fortress. Legend has it that her sorrowful spirit wanders amongst the tower rooms, a reminder of the power of love and the sorrowful end of an era.
The castle today: culture and tourism – The Castillo de Almodóvar del Río attracts many visitors every year, who are fascinated not only by its imposing architecture but also by the stories and myths surrounding its walls.
