The legend of the secret lake beneath Strasbourg Cathedral
Strasbourg Cathedral is the city’s landmark, and it is the subject of an ancient legend that has been told among the people for centuries. According to this legend, there is a mighty vault with a lake beneath Strasbourg Cathedral. Boats sail back and forth on this lake to the fish fountain, which was built in 1576. Many Strasbourg residents have heard the splashing of the water and the rowing of the boats at midnight, sending a chill down their spines. The sounds they heard were so terrifying. The entrance to this underground lake is said to be located under a house next to the “Zum Hirschen” pharmacy. But to this day, no one has managed to descend into the dark hole. Everyone who tried failed miserably. For when the door to the hole was opened, a terrible wind blew, extinguishing every light immediately. Attempts to explore the deep abyss with long poles were just as futile. Even the bravest were gripped by fear of this eerie place. It became particularly terrifying when the water of the Ill rose, because then the floods also rose under the cathedral and snakes, toads, salamanders, and other animal creatures crawled out of the hole, panting and with glowing eyes. Everyone who was nearby fled in terror from these strange creatures from underground. As a result, the hole and the door were bricked up and filled with rubble and stones. Even today, anyone who walks past the cathedral at midnight is said to hear the waves crashing, the ships rocking, and the gasping creatures. The sounds alone make many shudder and quickly rush back to the safety of their homes. Such is the legend of the underground lake beneath the cathedral, whose mystery will probably remain a secret forever.
