The Celtic tree circle: Every person is assigned a tree of life
During my visit to the saltworks park in Bad Rappenau, I discovered the Celtic tree circle at the edge of the park. Even for the Celts, trees were living beings with a special meaning. According to the Celtic calendar, the year is divided into 39 sections, each ruled by 21 different trees. In the Celtic tree circle, we find fragments of ancient Celtic knowledge that give us access to the fascinating world of trees. The Celts attributed various characteristics to trees and divided the year into phases. People were assigned the corresponding characteristics depending on their date of birth. But why did the Celts choose trees to represent human characters? The answer is simple: trees are an elementary prerequisite for human life; without them, we cannot even breathe. In addition, trees clearly show how other essential prerequisites for life, such as light, water, warmth, and nutrients, are faring. For the Celts, nature was an integral part of their world. For them, nature symbolized a house of God, in which the tree connected human existence with the divine breath. This myth is reflected in the Celtic tree circle. The Celtic tree calendar was created 2000–3000 years ago. In the Celtic tree circle horoscope, each person is assigned a tree of life. The Celtic tree circle consists of 21 trees. This number is based on the Celtic belief that each tree has a threefold structure: roots, trunk, and crown, and consists of seven parts: roots, trunk, bark, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit. Multiplying these two numbers gives the number 21, the 21 trees of life in the tree circle. The year is divided into four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter, each of which begins with one of the main trees: oak, birch, olive, and beech. While many trees appear twice a year, and one tree, the poplar, even three times a year, the main trees are only assigned to one day. The remaining 17 trees appear once in each half of the year. In the Celtic tree horoscope, each person can be assigned a tree of life based on their birthday. Each of these trees of life has certain characteristics and powers that are assigned to those born under that tree. My tree of life is the pine tree. The pine tree was revered by the Celts as a tree of fire. It symbolizes wisdom and eternal life. Those born under the pine tree are very agile and resilient, they offer their fellow human beings a sense of security, and in love they are impulsive and fiery. People with the tree sign pine are often talented organizers, they have a practical disposition and don’t do things by halves. Because of their reliability and humorous nature, they are highly regarded in their social environment. Pines are more selective than others when choosing their friends and partners, but their friendships usually last a lifetime and offer strong mutual support. That sounds very promising, I thought. I was really fascinated by the Celtic tree circle in Salinenpark and the ideology of the Celts. As the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky said: “I don’t understand how you can walk past a tree without being happy!”
